There are so many beautiful drives in Germany! The Romantic Route is probably the most popular, and for good reason. But, if you have kids that love reading stories, this one is for you!
Many of the Brothers Grimm stories are based in Germany and the route takes you through where they were born and places they lived and worked which were the basis of some of their fairy tales. It’s also a great way to see the country and some of the smaller towns.

We were a bit overwhelmed with how many places there were but we picked our favorites and headed off. The top places for us were Hamlen (Pied Piper) and Bremen (The Musicians of Bremen). We also stopped at Cinderella’s castle (not Neuschwanstein) and Snow White’s Castle, where we saw the mirror of the wicked Stepmother!!! One overnight was at Rapunzel’s Castle… With a very creepy dungeon.

Another super fun thing we did was cross a river on a one car ferry, operated by a super sweet man who ended his lunch break a little early to cross us to the other side.

Not only was this trip fun for the kids and historical, it also gave a reason to travel to the smaller towns and villages throughout Germany. It gave us a better feel of what Germany is like outside big tourist areas.
